Nicholas J. Whitmeyer (Witmire, Whitmore)

Nicholas J. Whitmeyer: Company C, 64th Regiment, NY State Volunteers. Age - 18. Enlisted September 16, 1861 at Otto to serve three years; mustered in as Private, Company C, September 24, 1861; re-enlisted as a veteran , Jan 29, 1864; wounded in action May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania, VA; transferred to Company A, September 22, 1864; promoted Corporal, October 10, 1864; Sergeant, April 7, 1865; mustered out with Company, July 14, 1865; also known as Witmire, Whitmore.

The Adjutant General's Report lists his surname with various spellings: Witmire, Whitmire, and Whitmore.

He is buried in Liberty Park Cemetery, Cattaraugus, Cattaraugus Co., NY.

Additional information about Nicholas:

Nicholas Whitmeyer was born in Alsace-Lorraine on July 4, 1844. In 1856 in company with an older brother and two sisters, he came to America and settled in Boston, NY. In 1859 he came to Otto where he worked until the summer of 1861, and on the 16th of August enlisted in Company C. 64th New York Volunteer Infantry for three years. He was in the Battle of Fair Oaks and in the Seven Days Fight, where he was prostrated by sunstroke and sent to the hospital. After partially recovering he was detailed to guard duty and stationed on Governor Wise's farm. He joined his regiment in June 1863 and was in the battle of Gettysburg, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, where on May 12, 1864 he received a gunshot wound in his arm and while in the hospital was taken prisoner the next morning by the Black Horse Cavalry, but escaped during the night of 13th and lay in hiding all the 14th, partly in the water of the North Anna River. He crossed the river just before dark but was discovered and shot at a number of times, escaped and reached the Union lines about 2 o'clock next morning. He was again sent to the hospital and rejoined his regiment at Cold Harbor, was in the siege of Petersburg and was present at the surrender of General Lee, having re-enlisted in the winter of 1863-64. He was mustered out at Elmira in July 1865 having served in 35 battles of the Civil War.
