Descendants of Marinus (Merinus) VAN VLECK

First Generation

1. Marinus (Merinus) VAN VLECK was born about 1775. He died 13 Jun 1858 in Herkimer Co., NY and was buried in West Schuyler Cem., Herkimer Co., NY.

Name on gravestone in West Schuyler Cemetery, Herkimer Co., NY is "Marenius" and states he was aged 73 years at time of death.

One source states he was born in Oneida Co., NY but Oneida Co. did not exist in 1775. It was formed from Herkimer County in 1798. He probably was not born in Herkimer County either as it did not exist until 1791. It is possible that in his later years, after the counties were formed, if he was born in an area that was at that time in Oneida Co., he would say that he was born in Oneida Co. But, that land was not organized at all (around the time of his birth). Since those areas (Oneida Co. and Herkimer Co.) were not organized in 1775 which was about the time that Marinus/Merinus was born. Story passed on to descendants is that the father of Marinus/Merinus was in the Revolutionary War and that Marinus/Merinus was living on land in Herkimer County that was given to his father as a land grant after the war. It was after the war that men received land grants (in recognition of their service in the Revolutionary War) and started moving west and north in NY state and started organizing new areas. It is my guess that this Marinus was born in Dutchess Co. All of the early van Vleckerens (except for Marinus Roelofse and his children) were born in Dutchess County.

It is quite possible that his father was Marinus (Merinus) H. van Vleckeren. This Marinus (Merinus) was born 15 Aug 1740 and is the only person in my database at this point who also used the first name of Merinus. This Marinus (Merinus) is probably the Merinus Van Vlack listed as an enlisted man The Militia - Dutchess County - Second Regiment in "Roberts: New York in the Revolution". Click here for information about Marinus/Merinus H. van Vleckeren. He is listed on the page as number 17 (child of Hendrik and Cornelia van Vleckeren).
