64th REGIMENT N.Y. Volunteers

Report Of Fourth Annual Reunion
AT SALAMANCA, N.Y.,
JUNE 29 AND 30, 1892
HISTORICAL SKETCHES
ROSTER OF SURVIORS
FOURTH ANNUAL RE-UNION
Introduction

In accordance with the call issued by the Regimental Society and mailed to every survivor of the 64th N.Y. Vol. Inf., whose address was then in the Secretary's possession, a re-union of our survivors, conjointly with those of the 154th N.Y. V. and Companies H. and I. of the 37th N.Y. V., was held at the Opera house in Salamanca, N.Y., June 29 and 30, 1892. As much time and money would be spent in September 1892 attending the National Encampment G.A.R. at Washington, D.C., the Executive Committee deemed this departure from the usual course the wisest plan to pursue, for this year only.

Notwithstanding inclement weather the attendance was quite large, the registry reaching about seventy of our own comrades, rather above the average of our annual gatherings. A good share of the time was spent in visiting and talking over the days when "we drank from the same canteen." Many comrades were present who had never met with us in re-union before.

A meeting was held in the Opera House in the afternoon of June 29th and the same evening a rousing campfire was lighted.

On these occasions the historical sketches which form the principal part of this report (with others of a similar nature relating to the 154th and 37th) were read.

The business meeting of the 64th N.Y.V. Society was called to order, in the Opera House at 10 a.m., June 30th, 1892, by Col. L.H. FASSETT, President. The minutes of the Gowanda re-union were read and approved. The Secretary and Treasurer read a report of the Monument Fund, showing a balance in his hands of $18.06 and also a report of the General Fund, showing a balance in his hands from previous year of $27.28, receipts from all sources during the previous year of $10.25, amount $37.53.

Expenses for year $34.80, leaving balance on hand, in General Fund, of $2.75.

The reports were approved and adopted.

Capt. B.R. CROWLEY, Chairman of the Monument Committee made a report that the Committee had made a final settlement with W.B. ARCHIBALD, contractor for Monument and had paid him in full, without calling upon the Monument Fund in hands of the Treasurer and had taken his receipt in full, which was filed with the Secretary. This report was approved and adopted and the Committee discharged.

On motion of Capt. W.L. ROSS, the thanks of the Association were voted the Monument Committee for the satisfactory manner in which they had performed their duties.

On motion of Capt. R.R. CROWLEY it was unanimously resolved to transfer the balance of the Monument Fund ($18.06) reported by the Treasurer to the General Fund, swelling it to the amount of $20.79.

A letter from Comrade Jeff W. DAVIS, Co. "F" of Washington, D.C. extending an invitation, from himself and wife, to all members of the 64th N.Y.V., attending the National Encampment in September, to call upon them at their home in a body while in the City was read by the Secretary. On motion it was resolved that the invitation be accepted.

Capt. CROWLEY called the attention of those present to the fact that a bill correcting the record of Comrade Geo. W. BARR, M.D., formerly Surgeon of the 64th N.Y.V., had, largely through the efforts of Hon. W.B. HOOKER, Member of Congress from this district, passed the House of Representatives and moved a vote of congratulations to Dr. BARR and of thanks to Hon. W.B. HOOKER.

The motion was carried unanimously. The president appointed a committee to draft and transmit letters of congratulation and thanks accordingly. Copies of these letters are on file with the secretary.

On motion it was unanimously voted to continue the officers of the association for another year.

The following is a list of the officers re-elected:

On motion of Capt. ROSS, the secretary was duly authorized to procure a set of books suitable for keeping the regimental accounts, roster, society records and historical data.

On motion of Comrade A.D. KERR it was voted that we hold a separate reunion in 1893, time and place to be fixed by the executive committee.

On motion of Surgeon Geo. W. BARR it was resolved that the historical papers read before the reunion and the proceedings, with the regimental roster, be published in pamphlet form, and that the secretary send a copy of the same to every survivor of the regiment whose address he can obtain. A collection of thirty-five dollars was then taken up to help defray the expenses of so doing.

The comrades, citizens and visitors who furnished music, recitations, speeches, etc. etc., were duly remembered with votes of thanks.

On motion the meeting was adjourned sine die.

JAMES M. PETTITT [sic], Secretary.

MEM.

It is especially desired that all comrades receiving this report write out and send in to the Secretary such reminiscences and incidents of their respective personal experiences as they can recall to mind. It is not essential that this be done all at one time. Whenever anything is thought of, write it down and send it in. Each one knows something that but few others knew. It is part of the work of the Society to collect material for a history of the Regiment and those personal recollections will be invaluable aid to this purpose. Through the death of comrades, something is lost each year that cannot be regained.

It is also hoped that the historical sketches now printed and presented will stimulate others to prepare further papers for our future re-unions, covering, from their standpoints, a part of the experiences of the Regiment.

Comrades are requested to report to the Secretary all deaths in our ranks as soon as practicable, after the event.

JAMES M. PETTIT, Secretary.

NOTE - The delay in getting out this report is regretted, and is the fault of the secretary. No one else should be blamed for it. An explanation of the causes of the delay will be given at the next reunion - J.M.P.
