John Toepp

John Toepp : 64th Regiment, NY State Volunteers. Age 18 years (see note). Enrolled Oct. 30, 1861 at North Collins to serve three years; mustered in as Private, Co. A, November 2, 1861; wounded in action Dec. 13, 1862 at Fredericksburg, VA; promoted Corporal Oct. 17, 1863; re-enlisted as a veteran Feb. 24, 1864; wounded in action June 18, 1864 at Petersburg, VA; promoted Sergeant August 18, 1864; mustered in as 2nd Lieutenant on May 15, 1865; as First Lieutenant on May 16, 1865; mustered out with Company on July 14, 1865 near Washington, DC.

NOTE: The Adjutant General's Report lists his age as 18, but in reality he was only 16 when he enlisted. He made it to 1st Lt. by the end of the war.

He is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Gowanda, Erie County, NY.
