Squire Seldon Payne: Company B, 64th Regiment, NY State Volunteers. Age - 36 years. Enlisted September 15, 1861 at Randolph to serve three years; mustered in as Private, Co. B on September 28, 1861; mustered out on September 27, 1864 near Petersburg, VA. Adjutant General's Report gives his name as Squire S. Paine.

Squire Seldon Payne (*Snowball) was born September 9, 1824 in Oneida Co, NY. His parents were Stephen Payne and Wealthy Miner. Squire married Paulina Orinda Dunbar November 21, 1849 in Coldsprings, Cattaraugus Co., NY. She was born April 6, 1830 in Madison Co., NY and died May 5, 1900 in Harlan Twp., Fayette Co., IA. She was the daughter of Lyman Dunbar and Sallie Merritt.

"Squire participated in the Battle of Fair Oaks, the Seven Days Battle of the Wilderness, Savage Station, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and Petersburg."

He died March 11, 1911 in Tacoma, WA. He is buried in Long Grove Cemetery, Fayette Co., IA.

*His nickname was "Snowball".
