Leman William Bradley was born March 6th 1820 in Salisbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut the son of Leman and Nancy (Everts) Bradley, he married Catherine Livingston Northrup, May 10, 1854, of Brooklyn, NY. She was born March 3rd 1823 in Austerlitz, Columbia Co., NY, the daughter of Israel and Orra (Evarts) Northrup (1787-1868).
Nancy Everts' line of descent is shown as: Nancy (1783-1862), Nathaniel Everts (1748-1835), Nathaniel Everts (1720-1792), Nathaniel Evarts (1675-1739), John Evarts (1640-1692), John 1st. It is noted that the article shown below fails to mention Leman and his wife Catherine were first cousins as their mothers Nancy and Orra were sisters. Both spellings of the Everts/Evarts name have been used throughout the generations. Leman was equally descended from the infamous Nathaniel Evarts that is mentioned in the article.
Leman had worked for Holley & Company, Cutlery Manufacturers of Lakeville, Connecticut in the early 1850s. In 1854, it was incorporated as the Holley Manufacturing Company, with Alexander H. Holley as president. Leman and Catherine's first of five children was son, Edward Northrup Fitch Bradley who was born in Hudson Feb. 4, 1855, but died after just over a year on March 9th 1856. He was interred at Hudson City Cemetery, section 4A. Next they had daughter Julia Adeline Raymond Bradley who was born March 16, 1857 and died Nov. 18, 1858. She too was buried at Hudson City Cemetery, section 4A.
In the 1860 census of Hudson, Columbia County, NY, we find Leman W. Bradley listed as "Leoman N. Bradley" a Dealer in Cutlery with $200. in real estate and $1200. personal, age 40 and born in CT. His wife Catherine L. Bradley, age 37, born in NY, worth $3000. in real estate. With them is one year old daughter Bertha Louise Bradley, born Feb. 22, 1859, Hudson, NY.
From the 1870 census of Hudson, Columbia County, NY, we see that Leman W. Bradley, age 50 and noted [in error] as being born in NY, was a Dealer in Cutlery and noted as worth $2500. With him was his wife, Catherine, age 47 also noted as born in NY, keeping house and she is noted as having $3500. in real estate and $6000. personal. With them are sons Arthur William, age 9, b. Feb. 16, 1861, Hudson, NY and Howard age 6, of whom more information is written below. It seems they had a domestic servant girl Cornelia Ham age 14, and Lydia Teller age 73, born in NY and without occupation, is also with them. Sister Bertha, full name of Isroeline Bertha Louise Bradley, had died Feb. 25, 1862 and was interred at the family plot at Hudson City Cemetery.
Leman had retired by 1880. Listed with Leman and Catherine that year in Hudson was son Howard, age 16, and Lottie Blair, age 8, at school, her noted relationship is as "other." No mention is made of their son Arthur, full name of William Arthur Leman Bradley, because he had died on June 10th 1874 in Hudson and was interred in the family plot. You may have noticed all the children had two middle names and the youngest, O. Otis Howard Bradley was the only one to survive. His mother Catherine died in Hudson in 1892.
From "Columbia County at the End of the Century," Volume II, Published and Edited Under the Auspices of the Hudson Gazette, The Record Printing and Publishing Co., Hudson, New York, 1900, we find more interesting information within the account of Leman's son Howard, which name he went by, although, it would seem his name was actually Otis.As for his first initial of O., we do not yet know what it stood for.
BRADLEY, Otis Howard, M. D, a native of Hudson, N. Y., where he resides, was born September 27, 1863. His father, Col. Leman W. Bradley, was a native of Connecticut. His grandfather, Leman Bradley, was one of the pioneers in the iron industry, owning mines and furnaces in both Connecticut and New York; the family home was in New York City during the winters. Col. Leman W. Bradley was also interested in the production of iron, and came to Hudson about 1855. Early in the Civil War he enlisted with George Macy and others, of Hudson, in a company in which he was lieutenant, and was transferred to the Sixty-fourth Regiment, New York Volunteers, of which he was promoted colonel. During his service he was wounded in the arm, and after his recovery he returned to his command, and while acting as brigade commander received a wound in his other arm and was left on the field for dead. He was discharged from the service in 1864. His wife was Catharine Livingston Northrup, a descendant of Nathaniel Evarts, who was a captain in the Revolutionary army, and a son of Nathaniel Evarts, who also held the rank of captain in Washington's army, and prior to that in the colonial forces. Dr. O. Howard Bradley received his preliminary education at the Hudson Academy, pursued a course of study at Williston Seminary, at Easthampton, Mass., and was graduated from the College of Physicians an d Surgeons (medical department of Columbia College) in 1889, and immediately began practice in Hudson. He is a member of the Columbia County Medical Society, the New York State Medical Association, and in Hudson was a member of the board of health and former health officer, and is now a member of the board of education. In 1894, he was married to Sarah G. Hubbell, daughter of Charles C. Hubbell.
By 1900, Catherine's death left Leman a widower, now age 80, he was living at 813 Warren Street in Hudson with Howard age 37 and his wife Sarah Gurney [or Gurnsey] Hubbell Bradley age 30, b. June 1869, NY, as the census states but her gravestone differs. Also with them is her father, Charles C. Hubbel, age 63, b. Dec. 1836, NY and two servants; cook, Sophia Holm, age 22, b. March 1878, Germany and waitress, Ellen Geary, age 27, b. Oct. 1872, NY.
In 1910, they are all four still residing at 813 Warren St., Hudson O. Leman age 90, Howard a General Physician, Sarah's father, Charles a Real Estate Agent. With them are 2 different servant girls; Addie Neyer age 41, b. NY and Elizabeth Warnbach age 18, b. NY.
By 1920 Howard and Sarah are alone at 813 Warren Street without fathers or servants. He still listed as a Medical Doctor and she noted as a Writer. They never had any children. Col. Leman William Bradley died in 1912 at Hudson, NY and was interred there within the family plot in section 4A of Hudson City Cemetery next to his wife, Catherine. Their son Howard died on Jan. 8th 1931 and Sarah lived on 20 more years. Her gravestone reads her birth date as July 30, 1869 and death as May 1st 1951.
On some of the pages of Leman's book, he noted:
