Descendants of Marinus Roelofse VAN VLECKEREN - Van Vlack and Van Vleck

Descendants of Marinus Roelofse VAN VLECKEREN

Notes

1. Marinus Roelofse VAN VLECKEREN

Marinus Roelofse Van Vleckeren (Van Vlekkeren)(1), b. probably in the last quarter of the 17th century (circa 1675); d. after 1747, when his name appears on the Fishkill, Dutchess County tax list (name listed as Marinus Van Vleekeren). His name was on the tax list from 1745-1747.

BIRTH: In notes about Marinus' daughter Jannetje in "Revised History of Harlem", pg. 581, the author (James Riker) gives his name as "Marinus Roelofs van Vleckeren whence Flackra and Flack." That would imply that Marinus may have been from a place in the Netherlands called "Flackra" or "Flack". The surname van Vleckeren means "from Flekkeroy" and Flekkeroy is an island off the coast of Norway. The below inset from a map in 1658 shows Flackee, Holland and that may be where Marinus and or his parents were from. It is implied because of the name. Variations of Flackee (van Flackra, etc) were used by early descendants of Marinus in various documents.

Flackee, Holland, circa 1658

Marinus "Roeliffs" was appointed constable from the Out Ward for the "Bowry Division" at a meeting of the Common Council in NY, Sept. 29,1709 (Minutes of the Common Council, 2:384, 387). He later petitioned this body for a grant of land, containing 150 acres or thereabouts, lying near the land of Teunis Idesse (Ibid, p. 447).

After Teunis Idensen Van Huyse (Marinus' father-in-law) died, his large farm, which extended from the present 89th St. to West 107th on the Hudson River, was divided among his children. Marinus received, for his wife, lot No.1 and 1/3 of No.2 (James Riker: "History of Harlem", rev., 1904,  p. 592).The date of the distribution of the property was June 22/23, 1720.

In the 1740s Marinus and Dina left NY and purchased land from Madame Catharyna Brett in Dutchess Co. ("Dutchess County Meetings", Lib. 5, p. 79). His name (listed as Marinus Van Vleekeren) appears there on the Fishkill tax list from 1745 to 1747.

DEATH: after 1747, when his name appears on the Fishkill, Dutchess Co. tax list.  His name was listed as Marinus Van Vleekeren. (Barbara Van Vlack)

BURIAL: probably buried in "Old Pioneer Cemetery" off Route 376 at the junction of Hwy 52, near Gayhead.  Also, supposedly buried there are people whose surnames were Hasbrouck, Halsted and Brinckerhoff.  The cemetery was approximately 1/4 mile from where Joris Van Vleckeren is buried. Joris' grave is now on private property. (Ibid)

Dina Theunis Idesse VAN HUYSE

In the baptismal records (RDC, New York Rec.) for Dina, her parents were listed as being Theunis and Jannetye (Thyssen) Idesse. Marinus' name on the marriage record was listed as Marinus Roelofzen van Vleckeren. When Marinus received property from his father-in-law's estate,("Riker's History of Harlem", rev. 1904, p. 592) Dina's parents were listed as Theunis Idensen Van Huyse and Jannetye (Van Pelt) Van Huyse. Jannetje's full maiden name was Jannetje Laenen van Pelt and the descendants of Mattys ("Thys") Laenen van Pelt line (Jannetje's father) started using the surname of LANE in the middle 1600's. The descendants of Mattys' brother (Teunis Janszen Laenen van Pelt) began to use the surname of VAN PELT.

Marriage Notes for Marinus Roelofse Van Vleckeren and Dina Theunis Idesse VAN HUYSE

MARRIAGE: The record is in Dutch. "Ingeschreven 1702 den 25 April Marinus Roelofz met Dina Theunisze, getrouwt den 19 May." (Jane Van Vleck: Ancestry and Descendants of Tielman Van Vleeck of Niew Amsterdam, p. 201)

BIOGRAPHY: On the baptismal records for Marinus' and Dina's children, the surname Van Vleckeren was not used and variations on Marinus' first name were used such as: Merynes, Marinus, Merynus, Merynis, and Merinus. The surname used for the baptisms of all children was Roelofse.

Marinus and Dina were witnesses at their nephew's baptism (Johannes Dykman)in 1728 (RDC NY baptisms) and their names were listed as "Maryn Roelofse, Dina Roelofse". At their granddaughter Dina's baptism in 1730 at RDC, NY, they were listed as Marynus and Dina Roelofse.

Additional Notes

1) Baptism and marriage records of descendants through Generation 4 indicate that the surname used was Van Vleckeren or Van Vlekkeren. I have seen reference to the fact that Van Vleckeren and Van Vlekkeren were no longer used as of about 1790. The 1790 Federal Census lists only the surname "Van Vleck". No Van Vlack are listed in the census.  All of the "Van Vleck" listed in the Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY census are descendants of Marinus and Dina.  Both the surname Van Vleck and Van Vlack are found in the 1800 Federal Census.  Since the simpler forms "Van Vlack" and "Van Vleck" are the surnames used by most of Marinus' descendants, Van Vlack will be used starting with Generation 5, except in those cases where a family has definitely adopted the "Van Vleck" spelling. (Ibid)

2) New information from Stevenson's Bible Record (Genealogical Forum of Portland, Oregon, Inc, Vol. XII, No. 4, pg. 31): this record shows birth dates vs. baptismal dates usually found in church records. Also, the bible record is Jane's "missing document" (Ancestry and Descendants of Tielman Van Vleeck of Niew Amsterdam by Jane Van Vleck, New York, 1955, Appendix 4) which identifies Abraham Van Vleckeren's (RIN 16 in this listing, he b. 1755) parents as being Hendrik Van Vleckeren (RIN 71 in this listing - b. 1712) and Cornelia Luwis.
