


George's Deposition about his capturing of two (2) Confederate Generals
"New York in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1865" by Phisterer, 1909, 3rd edition. "64th Regt. of Infantry, 1st/Cattaraugus Regt. (Veteran)" Volume 3, page 261 states: Brevet Commissions of New York Volunteers granted by the Governor of the State to enlisted men as follows: Van Vlack, George W.., Private, Company A, Second Lt.

"Brevets from the State Received by Officers and Enlisted Men of New York Volunteers":
The Legislature in resolutions of April 24, 28, 1865, authorized the Executive of the State, "it being a sacred and grateful duty, to acknowledge in any suitable manner the personal sacrifice and heroic deeds of the officers and soldiers of this State, who have or may aid the Govt. of the United States, in suppressing the existing wicked rebellion," to confer commissions with brevet rank, in any of the several grades which he is now authorized to confer, upon such officers and soldiers of the Volunteer forces of this State, as have or may distinguish themselves by gallantry in battle or meritorious and honorable conduct, which mark of honor shall be stated in the commission conferred.
Under this resolution the first commission was issued Sept. 13, 1865, and the last Jan. 30, 1882; and the following received brevet commissions accordingly: Page 362 - Van Vlack, George W., Private, 64th/Infantry; Second Lt. (Brevet), Oct. 10, 1868, for gallant and meritorious services
EXTRACT FROM ROLLS
Pvt. George W. Van Vlack of Co. A, 64th Regiment was enrolled on the 5th day of October, 1861 at Versailles, New York for 3 years. In August 64 he was listed as absent and missing in action at Ream's Station, VA and it was there that he was taken prisoner (captured through having surrendered"). Prisoner of War Records show him as being captured at Ream's Station, VA, Aug 25, 1864 and was confined at Richmond, VA. He was paroled at Varina VA, Oct. 8, 1864. He eventually was returned to Elmira, NY and was mustered out on muster roll Dec. 16, 1864 as 1st. Sgt.
